The Rockfish Gap Hawk Watch is located at the Inn at Afton Parking lot, just up the hill from the visitors center off of 250 near the I-64 exit 99.
Volunteers begin counting migrating raptors on August 15th and continue through the end of November. Raining or foggy weather cancel or postpones the count for the day. Thirteen species of raptors are counted at the hawk watch with Broad-winged hawks leading the tally. Peak Broad-winged hawk migration is the third week in September and in past years up to 10,000 Broad-winged hawks have been counted in a single day. |
