Family Day at the Hawk Watch

Saturday, October 10. 2015

11 am - 2pm

Turkey Vulture expert 11am
Falconer will be on site from 12 noon until 2pm

Area youth and their families are invited to a Family day at the Rockfish Gap Hawk Watch this Saturday, October 10th from 11am - 2pm. Come watch migrating raptors, see interesting displays, dissect some owl pellets, and enjoy refreshments.

Dress warmly, as it can get quite cold on the mountain top.  Bring a chair or blanket for sitting, and binoculars if you have them.

Early October is the peak of falcon migration over the Blue Ridge, and while the numbers are much lower than the Broad-winged hawk migration in September, it is still a wonderful experience to be mountain top.

Rain delays event.  If still raining after 12:30pm, event will cancel.
Below you will find raptor videos as well as suggested books and downloadable identification charts.

The hawk watch open house is right before the peak of Broad-winged hawk migration, but about a week later this is what the sky might look like.  Did you know that the single day record for Broad-winged hawks at the Rockfish Gap Hawk Watch is over 10,000 birds.  That's right, over 10,000 hawks in a single day.  My oh my!!
